What is a Chemical Peel?

A R&R Medical Aesthetics  is a skin treatment that improves your appearance by exfoliating and removing the outermost layers of damaged skin. It can help treat many conditions, including hyperpigmentation/melasma, sun damage, acne and scarring, wrinkles, enlarged pores, fine lines and dry skin.

Before you receive a chemical peel, we clean the skin to remove any makeup and oil. We then apply the chemical solution to the area that will be treated. This usually causes a warm or hot sensation for about two to ten minutes, followed by a stinging feeling that can be relieved with a cool compress. The type of peel you choose will determine how much discomfort you experience.

Light peels (also called lunchtime peels) remove only the outermost layer of skin. They can be used for fine wrinkling, acne, uneven skin coloring and dry or rough sun-damaged skin to promote a healthy glow.

Medium peels (also known as lasatin peels) remove the outermost layer and part of the middle skin layer. They are best for age spots, freckles and acne scarring, or for those who want a smoother complexion with a less blotchy look.

Deep peels (sometimes called trichloroacetic acid or phenol peels) penetrate the middle and lower layers of skin. They are used to reduce moderate age spots, freckles and uneven skin tone as well as precancerous scaly growths called actinic keratosis. They are performed only under a physician’s supervision and require anesthesia.

Generally, chemical peels are not recommended for dark skin tones because they increase your risk of developing extra pigmentation after treatment (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). It is important to consult with a dermatologist if you have naturally darker skin and want to minimize the risks.
